Politically Direct with David Bender 9-21-08

This week on Politically Direct, David Bender will be joined by actor and producer Robert Gant on his new film "Save Me". Save Me is a deft exploration of the controversial ex-gay movement. The story follows Mark (Chad Allen), a drug-addicted young man who overdoses and finds himself at the mercy of his disapproving family. Their solution to Mark's problems is to check him into a Christian run ministry overseen by Gayle (Judith Light), who believes she can help cure young men of their 'gay affliction' through spiritual guidance. And as he does every Sunday, our friend Farron Cousins of GoLeft.TV will also be here with an important story that somehow the mainstream media just doesn't cover. All this and your calls at 866 303-2270 today on Politically Direct.

wisconsin
David forgets that Wisconsin is the home of the John Birch Society, Joe McCarthy, Jim Sensenbrenner, and one of the recent Grand Wizards of the KKK. Once you get outside Madison and Milwaukee, it's mouth-breathing, knuckle-dragger heaven.
When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro" Dr. Hunter S. Thompson
Wisconsin
Hello from Milwaukee-
I wouldn't go so far to call them knuckle draggers, but it is true that Wisconsin is two blue oases in a desert of red. There's still a lot of rural area, farms, and true small towns full of what we might fondly call the "salt of the earth", who tend to be quite conservative. Also, the suburbs surrounding Milwaukee, west of Milwaukee, and (I suspect, though I don't know the area as well) Madison are upper middle class and upper class bedroom communities, also quite conservative. Additionally, Milwaukee itself has a big Roman Catholic community, which may account for the fact that you can't bet on Milwaukee being truly blue.
I'm a lifetime Wisconsin resident. I grew up in one of those upper middle class suburbs, and my family...with the exception of me...are all staunchly conservative. I guess I escaped to the big city and became a liberal freakazoid. I never have been able to figure out how one state can lay claim to Tailgunner Joe AND Fighting Bob Lafollette; Russ Feingold, Tammy Baldwin, AND Jim Sensenbrenner. Not to mention the fact that from 1910 to 1960 Milwaukee was governed by three socialst mayors.
Here in the city of Milwaukee, I can say I have never seen so much political activity- yard signs, local canvassing, very active local Obama office. My high school students (most of which will be too young to vote in November) go out canvassing. The thirteen year old daughter of a friend of mine asked for Obama buttons for her birthday. Seeing the level of engagement on the part of kids is in itself worth the price of admission, don't you think?
Thanks, Shifty!
And that is my favorite Hunter Thompson quote!
Palin
I am a 58 year old white woman, live in a town near Madison, WI, and ALL the women I know, from those in their 30's to their 70's think Palin is inept and a joke. I don't understand her appeal. I just voted on a site for PBS.org/NOW asking if Palin is ready to be VP. So far the voting shows more approval than disapproval. I don't believe this poll.
Quarter Million Voters Purged From SWING State Colorado
David -- URGENT Please investigate voter registration purging. Ring of Fire hosts last night said as many as quarter-million Colorado voters have been removed for reasons like middle name not matching government docs (ex. John Doe on drivers license, registration is John A. Doe).
The Republicans have removed thousands of democrats all over the country especially the swing states.
People MUST verify they are still registered and verify they will get their early voter ballots. They can do this on Barack Obama Website or VOTEFORCHANGE.com.
Caribou Barbie
I believe that people are beginning to see the light (or dark) regarding McCain's VP choice.
None of the Republicans I know are Christians, and I think her brand of religion is opening the eyes of these type of Republicans. In my opinion, it is ok to dig into her personal/religious life because that is really the reason they picked her. She doesn't have anything else going for her. Yes, she has been a governor, but of the state with the smallest population (800,000 maybe?) This should be emphasized "Governor Sarah, state of Alaska, population xxxx" should be her introduction.
Alaska has about the same number of people as Jacksonville, Florida. Maybe McCain should have chosen John Peyton (R), Mayor of Jacksonville?
political polling and cell phones
Please Please Please, whenever anyone asks why the current numbers are so close between Obama and McWORST, don't forget to explain that polls do not call cell phones. They are not allowed to do so, as cell phones are paid for per minute by the user. There are millions of younger people who only have a cell phone and no land line to call. They probalby make up the bulk of the 11 million more registered Democrats than registered Republican'ts! POLLS ARE FUNDAMENTALLY INACCURATE AND SHOULD BE COMPLETELY IGNORED. Excpet for exit polls, and even though Kerry was higher than Bush in 04 exit polls, the race was close enough to obviously steal. This can NOT happen again!! It will not be close, it will be Obama in a landslide. Everyone: please remind people of this simple fact about cell phones and political polls as often as possible. (Not to mention that sometimes the sample will be something like 600 people in northern Michigan or something like that. Read the fine print!!) Need more info: http://www.pollster.com/blogs/cell_phones_and_political_surv.php
Stealing the Vote
I will not be surprised if the Repugs are successful at STEALING the election for a 3rd time in a row. Check out http://www.brasschecktv.com/page/430.html Greg Palast thinks it's going to happen again. Why don't you?
There are MAJOR Repuglican't DIRTY TRICKS going on in Michigan, Ohio, Florida and many other states where they plan on contesting HUNDREDS of THOUSANDS of voters in EACH state for a total of over 3 MILLION votes.
Biden should drive Plain to TEARS. He should call her a LIAR and a FACIST on so many levels.
Wisconsin
I am a 40 year old woman that lives outside of Madison as well....I work as a massage therapist, and as you may guess poor people are not my best customers.....so I am sad and disappointed to say that there are alot of conservative people in Wisconsin, I don't understand them, but they are here.....
I am also very concerned about votes being blocked in this state, how sad that our freedom of choice may just be an illusion.
As for Sarah Palin....just say NO to hockey moms.
Mrs. Obama will be in Madison tomorrow morning and Barack will be in Green Bay tomorrow at noon.....I hope they win.
Yeah, Barack is even tempered and CALM
Right, David -- that is what the public is seeing and noting, rather than frenetic Princess Palin of Pork and reformed maverick McBush.
Thanks for reminding us, David!!

start spreading the message
I feel that its important for everone to spread the word about making our votes counts.
people who pre-vote or mail in their vote have to remember to include a color photo copy of their
id, or else ,according to robert kennedy jr their vote will be thrown out.
also obama's web site has a way to see if your registered to vote in your district.
we have to be able to offset what the republican's are going to steal so please, lets start repeating this as much as possible to everyone we meet . that is if they are dems.

PS let me say its hell living in a red state
can you imagine another 4 years off conservative policies
Another Cheeshead here
I'm from Sheboygan WI, and I can tell you that there are plenty of knuckle-draggers in this part of the state. I work in a factory that is represented by the UAW (United Auto Workers), and most of my fellow union brothers and sisters are McCain supporters. What's the matter with Kansas? Hell, what's the matter with my co-workers???? They actually defaced some issue posters that were put up on the union bulletin boards at work. I guess they all want to accelerate shipping their jobs to China by voting for McSame. Unreal!!!
I donated $50 to Obama and will be voting for him come November.
Voting and VP debates
Having been in Ohio in 2004 to work on the election I can attest to the fact that the election was stolen, So many things went on that people were yelling but no one heard or listened. I contacted the media and even called an Air America program to alert people to the problem. On Air America we were put on hold for 45 minutes and finally had to hang up while the host just ranted and ranted about the same thing over and over. I then emailed various cable and news stations and there was zero response. As many are aware there was a blackout about the problem except for Olbermann. We called the Dem party for help at the polls and they told us to write down names and problems and never even collected the forms nor did they send assistance. We did bring the forms in of course but have a feeling they were just trashed. So we started www.bringavoter.com At this site there is a map with a link to every state about voting and registration forms. Also links will bring voters to the Robert Kennedy Jr article at Rolling Stone Mag. Please send out to all any info you have about the voting registration problem. While some say it is the economy stupid! I say yes but it is the Supreme Court Stupid." We can not risk our country going to the right and the implementation of religious regulation over human rights, corporate rights over human rights and all of nature, etc.
As to the VP debates. It is very very dumb and irresponsible to have the one and only VP debate on Friday night when Orthodox and Traditional Jews, as well as Seventh Day Adventist would not be watching. What are they thinking? These people are leaning toward Mcain and do not even know much about Palin and many of the issues. What were the planners thinking? Or a usually were they even thinking??????? Neon
FYI: VP debate is on THURSDAY, October 2nd
First PRESIDENTIAL debate is this Friday, Sept. 26th, followed by two more: Oct. 7 and Oct. 15.
oops The Presidential Debates on Friday night*
neon
Correction the presidential debate one of three is on Friday night. This applies in the same way as to who will not be able to listen and the first debate has now been designated for foreign policy. A subject which is key to many Orthodox Jews.

FLORIDA IS VERY CLOSE RIGHT NOW
I'M IN NORHT CENTRAL FLORIDA. MY LITTLE TOWN OF WELAKA ABOUT 1 1/2 HOURS FROM JACKSONVILLE IS VERY REPUBLICAN AND VERY RACIST. BUT PUTNAM COUNTY ITSELF HAS ALOT OF MEXICANS AND AFRICAN AMERICANS AND I'M SEEING A LOT OF OBAMA SIGNS ON FRONT LAWNS. I ALSO NOTICED ABOUT 30 MC CAIN SIGNS THAT WERE REMOVED FROM PEOPLES YARDS WHO LIVE VERY CLOSE TO THE MEXICAN COMMUNITY. I AM URGING EVERYONE TO VOTE AND EVEN BE A POLL WORKER IF THEY CAN. Howdy all,
My friend Thelonious has a great new blog up. Check it out:

Clinton's lie.
My dear Mr ValachiCarluchi,
Clinton's budget surplus was a fake, eh? Just an accounting trick. Wow we were fooled. And to think that in the last ten years no one... NO ONE, not even Limbaugh or O'Reilley or Coulter, none of them could be bothered to mention it... hmmmmmm. I suggest that if anything like that was anywhere near true, it would have been smeared all over the airwaves 24/7 for 10 years. So stop the nonsense and write about McCain's health care plan.... it is ... DEREGULUATE!!! To imitate the profound success of the financial services industry.
War hero? Sure. Moron about economics? Afraid so.
Older people for Obama
David you keep repeating MSM position that older Americans are not strongly for Obama. My experience is that not only are those over 60 I have canvassed overwhelmingly for Obama but also my fellow canvassers are regularly part of this demographic. Older Americans are not stupid as the McCain campaign and the corporate media seem to think. Obama/Biden '08.
Were any of them obese? Most fat people aren't that bright.
Have you done any canvassing among Lieberman lovers?
Yes, believe the polls
Sorry folks, face it, the presidential race is tied nationally. Don't reply on our own anecdotes. I f I did, well, while doorknocking Saturday in Minneapolis, I saw as many McCain signs as Obama signs. Yes, in MINNEAPOLIS. That's like seeing loads of Republicans in Madison or San Francisco.
As a side issue, please Obama campaign get those signs out --- I ordered one during the convention and we should be swamping the McCain campaign. At least in Minneapolis, which I hasten to add is in a tied state.
Regarding the polls, sorry folks, the close race not only is believable, it's predictable. Let's admit the elephant in the room. Our candidate is dark-skinned, and many Whites aren't ready for that yet. If just 5% of voters would vote for a White Democrat, but will vote Republican if the Democrat is non-white, that would change the election from a 10-point Obama lead to a tie. I don't know that 5% is right, but you see how little it takes.
Also, I know from past elections that a chunk of voters, the ones only paying attention now, don't connect issues with candidates. Counter-intuitive I know, but some people will vote for a candidate they disagree with, probably with no interest in whether they agree with him, if they like that candidate better, and people like McCain for what they think they know about him.
Also, though McCain is like Bush, he isn't Bush, so some people who can't stand Bush just aren't open to that line of reasoning.
Above all, remember that though Republicans suck at governing, they are great at campaigning. When they need only get by for a few weeks or days and don't have to worry about being found out, they're at their best. They still have loads of cash, a good GOTV operation, a willingness to lie, and good heads for strategy.
So please, take these polls seriously. Don't buy into the nonsense about no one with cell phones are polled, or that every bad poll has flawed methodology.

David, as democrats we tent
David, as democrats we tent to intellectualize everything. And for any rational person Sarah Palin is a joke. But as democrats we put too much importance on that. When were ignorance, stupidity, and lack of qualifications disqualifying factors for republican voters?
David Bender Rocks...
One thing about intelligence is that bright people can take in and process large amounts of information, and draw good quality conclusions very quickly... you have to be able to do that to get a law degree from Harvard with honors. You have to be able to do that to run a huge government and command the most powerful military on the planet... Please please please look at Caribou Barbie's college transcripts.... Before you vote...

Tipping Point
This week there were reports that social networking has surpassed porn in Internet traffic.
One might be able to look back one day and say that was one point where the grassroots began to overwhelm crass commercialism and cynical political manipulation in public discourse. It could be the turning of the tide in eclipsing the power of corporatist propaganda and empty info-tainment. The rejection of ideology over self interest. The day we got Kansas back.
The thought of social media becoming a dominant force linking vast numbers of folks together in the way that we want to connect is fabulous. We can all join a huge kitchen table to discuss ways to move our society forward. Or just talk about cats.
The other idea I wanted to share is a way I think we can effectively frame the larger choice we face in this election.
You remember Ross Perot. While he was nutty in his own way, he did give us the “giant sucking sound” meme, one of the more visceral and memorable lines to enter our political theater.
To me, the “giant sucking sound” captures the essence of the Bush value system and the core of what we need to fight against. But the great transfer of vitality that causes the sound is not between the US and Mexico but between the poor & middle classes and the rich. And the sucking sound is going up. The vitality of the nation is being sapped from the majority and shifted to the wealthy and powerful elite. It’s the sound of the rich getting richer and the poor getting screwed.
And it’s not just money.
It’s health. It’s education. It’s safety. It’s privacy. It’s free time. It’s the ability to redress grievance. It’s the rule of law. It’s our freedom.
I really don’t like the giant sucking sound. It’s not what America is all about.
When I think about what has been going on during the Bush years in terms of the powerful taking advantage of their privilege to feed their own narrow self interests, skew the playing field and shield themselves from accountability, I get really pissed off. It is time for change.
Thanks for reading.
Our China Syndrome Economy
What do you suppose the connection of Sovereign Monetary Funds and in particular the Carlyle Group’s investment in firms torpedoed by the subprime loans is to George Bush’s sense of urgency in getting a bailout bill passed post haste? The more shrill GWB gets about passing this bill the more certain I am that it’s to save his economy, not mine. This would also explain the need to have a bill with no congressional or judicial oversight.

Biden-Palin
David: I've seen this before on a tennis court and I'm worried about the Biden-Palin debate. What I mean is this: when your opponent is injured, the other player doesn't know what to do and loses concentration and sometimes even the game. Then you think: how could I lose this?
Please comment on this.... What is Biden supposed to do when Palin answers a question like she did with Couric?
John Mc Cain at the Debate
Hi David, With having family members who have suffered from strokes and alzheimers John Mc Cain clearly has something wrong. If you look AT him, the right side of his face droops and he seems to be somewhere else at times while trying to answer questions. These are 2 signs of both conditions. When you have seen these signs in your own family they tend to jump out at out. My observation is not to critize but to be concerned. I am an Obama supporter but what I see when I look at John Mc Cain is very serious. Thanks. Marilyn from Welaka, Florida
