WASHINGTON (AP) — The AARP has officially endorsed the House Democratic health care bill, a major boost for the legislation two days before a historic vote.

AARP Senior Policy Adviser John Rother said Thursday that the 40-million strong organization backs the House bill. He said the measure closes the coverage gap in Medicare prescription benefits, puts strict limits on what health insurers can charge older workers too young for Medicare and creates a voluntary, long-term care insurance program.

Officials with the seniors lobby said the organization lost 150,000 members since July 1 because of the group's support for health overhaul. But in that time, it also registered 2.7 million new members and renewals. Officials said they were confident their members would see the bill's benefits.

You make an excellent point, and you may be surprised that Thom Hartmann has been saying the same thing for several years. He says that AARP is nothing but a shill for the insurance industry, and refuses to support them.

That being said, the current bill under consideration is neither as bad as opponents say, nor as good as supporters would like.

Thanks for telling us. Now, just so you know...

Health care reform will be passed and signed by the President, no matter how much you whine.

Just so you all know, AARP stands to make huge profits if Medicare Advantage plans go under. These bills are cutting massive amounts from Medicare Advantage so AARP stands to make a lot of
Medicare Supplement sales if that happens. AARP represents themselves. Not for profit my butt. At best, maybe 2% of my senior customers are AARP members or back their products.

Obviously, the endorsements of the AMA and AARP should carry extraordinary weight. Meanwhile, the Republicans continue to sponsor their puerile "tea parties," trivializing the very practice of protest while supporting the interests of corporations.

When will Republicans ever grow up?

I look forward to seeing the continuing disintegration and declining fortune of the Republican Party.
