Tim Kaine Appointed DNC Chairman

By Ring of Fire

Here is the round-up of today's news brought to you by The Daily Left on Go Left TV.

Hey Everybody! I’m Lea Morris and you’re watching The Daily Left on Go Left TV. Thanks for joining me.

With DCN Chairman Howard Dean scheduled to step down this month, the search for his successor has been in full swing. But it looks like the hunt is over. According to party officials, Barack Obama has selected VA Gov. Tim Kaine to serve as the next chairman of the Democratic National Committee. Last year in the presidential election, Kaine helped deliver VA to the Democratic Party for the first time in more than 40 years. Kaine, who was once a contender to be Obama’s running mate, will remain in his current job and work part time at the DNC until 2010, when his term as governor is up and he can take over the party chairmanship full time. Obama is expected to make the official announcement sometime this week. And Kaine won’t be alone. Obama has also chosen Jennifer O’Malley Dillon, who directed his successful campaign battleground state strategy, to run day-to-day operations at the party as executive director.

New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson has abandoned his nomination to become commerce secretary under pressure of a grand jury investigation into a state contract awarded to his political donors; an investigation that threatened to embarrass President-elect Barack Obama. Richardson insists he will be cleared in the investigation, but both Richardson and Obama have said it has become clear that the grand jury probe might take so long that it would push Richardson’s confirmation hearings back 6 weeks or longer. A federal grand jury is looking into how a CA company that contributed to Richardson’s political activities won a New Mexico transportation contract worth nearly $1.5 million. Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs said that a new commerce secretary will be nominated soon, but a timetable has not yet been set.

And finally, after the last 8 years, it’s hard to imagine that there’s anyone left in the United States that would be eager to see another Bush become president…but there is. Not surprisingly, President Bush The First sais in an interview yesterday that he would like to see Jeb become president one day. Jeb is the little brother of W and the former governor of FL. He is currently considering a run for the Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Mel Martinez. But even Bush 41 knows that W might have ruined those chances. He was asked about Jeb’s consideration of the Senate seat, and he responded, “I’d like to see him run. I’d like to see him be president someday.” When asked if he was serious he said, “Or maybe senator. Whatever. Yes, I would. I mean, right now is probably a bad time, because we’ve had enough Bushes in there. But no. I would. And I think he’s as qualified and able as anyone I know on the political scene.” Adding, “Now, you’ve got to discount that. He’s my son.” Bush 41 plans on joining W, Obama, Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter this week for lunch at the White House but says he does not plan to offer advice to Obama, but does want to wish him luck. After all, he’s going to need it in trying to clean up W’s messes.
