Shortly after we started The Inside Story, it became clear that the still-fledging medium of progressive talk radio would demand more from us beyond simply making political chatter as fun to listen to as it is for us to participate in. Indeed, we were faced with a challenge that, should we choose to accept it, could revolutionize the way young people hear the news. We were going to have to find intro and outro music that was not "Bittersweet Symphony."

And so we have tried. Each week for the past several months, the staff of The Inside Story scours its collective iTunes catalog for the perfect music to introduce a segment, or to take us into a break. Sometimes it's a song that makes a particular comment on the news. Sometimes it's just something catchy with at least ten seconds of an instrumental opening.

In any case, we're happy with the results, and we want you to be happy as well. Thus: Please play along, as it were. Take a listen to the musical breaks in last week's episode (listen via iTunes -- easier for Mac users -- here) and post your guesses as to what songs we used in the comment area. The first listener to guess all eight snippets correctly wins the chance to pick out a song to be used in next week's show. There is actually no second prize. Not even steak knives. Sorry.

Hint/spoiler: There is one song that is definitely NOT from a staff iTunes playlist; it was selected, on the fly, by one of the guests.

Happy humming along -- and who knows, maybe we'll do it again next week.

DEADLINE: Noon Thursday. (So the winner will be able to pick their tune in time for this week's taping.)

Looking forward to giving the contest a try. I sure hope you play some obscure jazz, as that is my specialty.

I usually love music trivia contests like this, but I am completely stumped. Didn't get a one of them.

This is me, making sure it is possible for you to enter the contest, should you be logged in and whatnot. It appears that it is.
