Senator Joe Lieberman's gift to the Health Insurance Industry, much of which is based in his home state of Connecticut, can also be seen as historically relevant. No other Democrat has ever joined the Republican party to Fillibuster a Democratic bill.
The whole, tangled twist in the Healthcare debate gets broken down by Rachel and Firedoglake's Jane Hamsher, who also makes history by issuing The Rachel Maddow Show's first on-air dare to a member of congress.

Polly Tics, - Yeah, I lost it in one section. Here are my 2 excuses; nay reasons, and I'm sticking to them: 1) Ccomputers prefs corrupted, text jumps around online and in email. Stubborness overrides inconvenience until pain in a** great enough and prompts me to fix issue. 2) Must self-edit; no comments allowed at close of an all-nighter; morning person I am not. "Elements of Editing" & Strunk and White, et al, well worn. Back to old-style or not. Uncle! Energy and sentence structure, seem to trip, tangle, and all fall down, when I endeavor to write with the abbreviated flow of the day's text, ripped effortlessly by some. Oh, the point? Your point so taken.

Just a thought: PUNCTUATION can be your friend!
.
My first reaction was, "What the h*ll?" (*placement? necessary?) 2nd thought, has Lieberman ever had the arterial flow of his carotid checked? Wife 'o Joe, pierce thru the corruption haze surrounding you both, however dense; is this the usual speech cadence of Little Joe? Head injury(s) during past year or so? Subdural hematoma? [Personal note, clear example of the 1st place I go to; expect the best of others. Ain't gonna drop this entirely, but now is the time to develop skills of discernment, crap, even at age 51.) My whole thought process, not the point, when the truth brought to light thru actual research and applied journalistic skills, once basic. Ms. Maddow herself, and the show's crack reporters consistent use of journalistic protocol; one knows 1st, by tone of text, that they don't claim to be reinventing the wheel. Refreshing, isn't it? Appreciated tout as fact, the occluded truth Greed is greed & Truth Never Changes. #! God of the Right; is the Higher Power of the Almighty Dollar. You hold Pfizer stocks or the like? Blood money, period. OK, so let us all, all who have the ability to give a dang about someone other than ourselves, and if you voted for Shrub (Ms Molly, we miss ya), a 2nd time, this ain't you. (1st time, shame on you; 2nd time, neither IQ nor EQ in sight. Obama, Obama, you can stand and act in integrity, far beyond what you know. Peoples of the World, steadfast & support so profound, the time is NOW, Mr. President, you possess the ability to surprise even yourself. The 2nd term will come, no doubt, when your decision are made in alignment with your integrity known. Corporatization stopped; Bi-partisanship invalidated! Do Everything Differently, and this doesn't mean whacked, oh delusional zombies of the Right. Rahm Emanuel, step back, if you too become wiling; that you might dare to enjoin shift in perspective, presently askew— Mr. President and Rahm, in this moment, all definitions fall away, even that of "black man." Other constructs we once thought so important, forgotten. Sentences simply will begin with, Barack Hussein Obama, a man of great intellect and depth of courage, his clarity of vision, when on the precipice of change, we held our breath, heaved a collective sigh, as Obama became Change-in-Action, even-keel. Leadership thru Power, not Force. He found that balance arises when the facts borne of intellect work with the Truth of Heart, OK fine, use the term gut, whatever. Parity in; disequilibrium out. Ability to parse facts and eschew crap; Barack H Obama rose to and beyond the time at hand; he changed the World. [The Nobel Peace Prize, an august start, yes; but looking back these 25 years now, it seems a ripple to the wave. Corporate veneer crumbled; Power of the People, multilayered, remains.]

Are there not conflict of interest laws that apply to Congress? Are not the actions of Lieberman and Bayh ethic violations? Or do ethics have no meaning in Congress? Are there no consequences for the disloyalty Lieberman has shown not only to the Democratic party but to his constituents? Your respondents who worry about the increased unemployment in insurance if these businesses have to deal with regulation and competition might suggest that those unemployed go to work for the government insurance program if we ever get one. I am glad that your guest clearly named the corruption of Lieberman and Bayh.
The way it's going maybe the uninsured should invest in insurance stocks and then they could afford the premiums.
Rachel,
Come on, in your piece on your tv show tonight on Joe and Evan, there was NO comment on what industries and employers are in their states. Aetna, Lilly/Squibb etc.. And how many people to they employ in those states; and what does a one percent drop in GDP for health care mean for employment, and in what states are they concentrated? Why do you think Evan never made it to VP? Come on, there's lots of good (and easy) stuff here that isn't completely partisan. You're real good; you can do this! John
Harry Truman was a different kind of President. He probably made as many important decisions regarding our nation's history as any of the other 43 Presidents. However, a measure of his greatness may rest on what he did after he left the White House.
The only asset he had when he died was the house he lived in, which was in Independence Missouri . His wife had inherited the house from her mother and other than their years in the
White House, they lived their entire lives there.
When he retired from office in 1952, his income was a U.S. Army pension reported to have been $13,507.72 a year. Congress, noting that he was paying for his stamps and personally licking them, granted him an 'allowance' and, later, a retroactive pension of $25,000 per year..
After President Eisenhower was inaugurated, Harry and Bess drove home to Missouri by themselves. There were no Secret Service following them.
When offered corporate positions at large salaries, he declined, stating, "You don't want me. You want the office of the President, and that doesn't belong to me. It belongs to the American people and it's not for sale."
Even later, on May 6, 1971, when Congress was preparing to award him the Medal of Honor on his 87th birthday, he refused to accept it, writing, "I don't consider that I have done anything which should be the reason for any award, Congressional or otherwise."
As president he paid for all of his own travel expenses and food.
Modern politicians have found a new level of success in cashing in on the Presidency, resulting in untold wealth. Today, many in Congress also have found a way to become quite wealthy while enjoying the fruits of their offices. Political offices are now for sale. (sic. Illinois)
Good old Harry Truman was correct when he observed, "My choices in life were either to be a piano player in a whore house or a politician. And to tell the truth, there's hardly any difference!
I say dig him up and clone him!!
Rachel,
Did you know that CT has passed a state public option healthcare bill overriding a Governor's veto to do so??
The bill is known as SustiNet and I find it amazing that Joe Lieberman would be against something that actually passed overwhelmingly in his home state!
You can find more information on the bill which is a 2 year implementation bill that has to go back to the legislature for funding in 2011on www.healthcare4every1.org website and the Universal Health Care Foundation of CT's website: www.universalhealthct.org.
The plan was drafted by Stan Dorn of the Urban Institute and studied using macro and micro economic modeling by Dr. Jonathan Gruber of MIT.
I enjoy your show.
Nancy
Rachel,
I watched your little stock analysis last night and I have to say it was stupid analysis. First, if you had been truly following these stocks over the past month, you would realize that they have been down about 20% from recent high due to current legislation proposals for health reform. The day previous to Lieberman's remarks, the stocks were down several percent and they were down again today. I know you take pleasure in the Idea of companies with thousand of employees and shareholders and millions of customers relying on their ser ices losing billions in future profits (despite the fact that these companies have below average profit
margins) that will ultimately place these companies in jeoprady. I do not think it is inappropriate for a Senator to represent the well being of his constituents who work in this industry. Not to mention that his point that the gov't really does not have the capability to manage such a program. The fact that these stocks went up on his comments was one blip in a sea of downward momentum. Anyway before pulling stock charts to
make insipid pointless commentary on subject matter that you are completely ignorant about, try just focusing on what you are far better at - debating ideas (even though I totally disagree with you on everything but someone has make the mindless happy). Cheers, David
I've been obsessing over LIEberman all day! I can't even concentrate on work as I once was a delegate for him-omg!
And that is exactly the drift of the scathing email I sent to him-choosing the lobby $$ over the constituents-the people that supported him all those years.
And he professes to be "holier-than-thou", without regard to human suffering, human life.
Disgusting!
