Look, it's hard to hear this, but this is a generational problem not a racist problem. See, the new generation (1965 and younger) doesn't have a problem with a black president. We (whites) grew up with a black friends, dated black girls and worked for black managers.

This only a problem for you (your generation). That is why we want you to get out of the Democratic Party. Your generation of Democrats are gutless, fish bellied, wimps and your approach to politics is done. It is time to move on.

No more Geraldine Ferraro's. So how we approach racism in this country is for you guys to go away .. There are more troops in Iraq now - after the Democrats took over than there were before. Bush has gotten everything he's wanted. The Supreme Court is now contaminated with hard-line republicans.

Face it your generation is a big fat failure.

Reverand Sharpton's speech at the 2004 Democratic convention

Of all the speeches at the 2004 convention Reverand Sharpton's was for me the most moving and the most significant. What made it so moving for me is that he was willing to point out the ugly parts of our Party's history, it's support of slavery and racism, and to demand that we do better. Or to paraphrase, it is not so much that the Demcratic party is so awesome on race, it is that the Republican party under Reagan became so awful on race. And Reverand Sharpton's admonition that "we will ride this donkey as far as it takes us" hit home for me as a life-long Democrat who happens to be a woman. Our Party's stand on women's rights vs. that of the Republican party had been awful. The Republican party was created in part by women's rights advocates, the Republicans supported the ERA starting in 1940, and then Regan took over the Republican party and declared it anti-choice. Again it is not so much that the Democratic party is so awesome on women's rights, it's that the Republican party became so awful.
And whether Reverand Sharpton's speech echoed what was going on within the party or whether his speech caused it to happen the end result is that we now have two candidates who embody the best ideals of the Democratic party. And Reverand Sharpton's speech, which forced us to face our history, is what made this moment possible.
