Sins
Thom, I think you're conflating two categories of sin. Mortal sins are sins that so offend God that you go tell Hell for them. They're stuff along the lines of murder, missing Mass, stealing large amounts of something, things like that. Venial sins are less egregious sins that sentence you to a stretch in purgatory before you get to heaven.
The Seven Deadly Sins are categories of sins enumerated by St. Augustine that if one falls into the habit of committing may endanger your soul. They can be Mortal or Venial depending on the extent to which they are practiced. The Deadly Sins are just lists to be memorized as part of a child's religious education. They are counterbalanced by the Seven Saving Graces.

By semaforeMay 14, 2008 - 2:48pmThe Roman Catholic Church
The Roman Catholic Church as a political/economic entity is the original "multinational corporation".
Hearing Thom read the new seven deadly sins today, I was put aback by the one about it being a sin to accumulate outlandish wealth. It brought back to mind my attending the Vatican's traveling art exhibit back in the 1980s. Well, you've heard the saying "Does a bear s--- in the woods?" Well, you can substitute "Does the Pope collect art?" for the same meaning.
It's interesting that the Roman Catholic Church should come up with this new sin (which sounds like an appropriate sin, that is, if it applies to everybody!), since the Roman Catholic Church knows so well what it means to accumulate wealth. Here in this country alone, the Roman Catholic Church must own MORE real estate than it could ever need, real estate property that exceeds the footprints of its churches and church programs, and evidently has been the model in this country for all the other church businesses which are using the tax-free status to build rich empires.
Just how much accumulated wealth is too much? Does it matter who is accumulating it? Who gets to decide what is too much and who gets a pass?

By noraMay 14, 2008 - 2:57pmThom I know you are trying to re-unite the party
when you say Clinton didn't mean the comment about po' white folks the way it came out. And I don't argue with your logic in taking the high road.
BUT, take the rose colored glasses off for a minute and remember this: Clinton does NOT make verbal MISTAKES. She may tell an untruth but she does so with a purpose; she doesn't make gaffes. When she said what she said about the AP article regarding white working people of lower incomes, she was doing what she did when she used Reverend Wright, Farrakhan and Ayers--playing a combo of the race and fear card. Don't kid yourself; she knows exactly what she says. All the time. She is way too good at this stuff; no ad-libbing that hasn't been thought out for her.
