Obama - Ask Hillary First!

By Thom Hartmann

The issue at hand for the Democratic Party for winning in ‘08 is not losing to McCain but losing to a divided Democratic party. The first thing Obama should do if nominated is put Hillary on the ticket. Will the Republicans have a field day with her on the ticket? Yes! Is their some bad blood in the water due to some negative campaign strategies on the part of the Clintons?  Probably.  Can Hillary be a tough fighter able to play tough allowing Obama to stay higher above the fray? Yes!

Howard Dean said a few months ago that the loser will be the most important person in the Democratic presidential run this year. Hillary's legacy in this 08 election could place her as the healer and bring together a united Democratic party. As a winning ticket they also move this country closer to healing the racial and misogynist undertones that still have roots.

Can you picture Denver with Hillary's delegates close to half of all delegates demanding that she be included on the ticket? To some it's a crusade. If Hillary was the one out ahead - by just a little over half - wouldn't Obama supporters want the same?

Obama's offer and Hillary's acceptance of an Obama/Clinton ticket hold the healing and the power to move this country in the direction of the real change in Washington that Obama talks about. First he must bring the Democrats back together again.

Obama - ask Hillary first.

I'm not sure

It's going to be difficult to ignore Senator Clinton's rather astounding comparisons of her desire to seat all the delegates from FL and MI without sanction to past American voting rights struggles and the current Zimbabwe oppression. She went too far with that, I believe, to be taken seriously, and it's especially remarkable given that this is a reversal from her earlier position that the FL and MI primaries didn't count.

PLEASE!

Hillary may not be box office poison yet, but she's sure damn well poison for the Obama folks. If Obama can't win without her (and I doubt this seriously) then let him LOSE with dignity.

In case you haven't noticed Thom, Hillary is scraping the bottom of the barrel of decency. Barack (and the American people) don't need that kind of energy except at a distance. With the U.S. economy tanking ---and the rest of the society, for that matter --- all we need are the cheesey, pandering, racist Clintons near Barack. What a nightmare!

The Clintons are not Change

Thom -
Obama has so far run a successful campaign anchored by Change.
Overall his campaign is a new level of discourse in the American political world at least in recent times. His insistance that everyone associated with him conduct themselves in a positive and constructive manner and his willingness to disassociate if not completely drop those who stray off that path, is the example of that integrity.
Clinton on the other hand has resorted to Rovian tactics and methods, which has been a bane to Dems.
Even inviting Clinton into his fold would constitute a collapse in the integrity of this change campaign.
Obama should choose someone who can step up to his level of discourse as opposed to someone who would bring him down morally and ethically.
Clinton has failed in this campaign and in her refusal to accept that fact, and renewed efforts to "do whatever it takes to win because I'm right" is a gross and destructive form of ego AND as such diminishes Obama's message by it's very essence.
The means do not justify the ends,
The means ARE the ends.
You more than most should know that in your bones.
I'm surprised at your request.
McCain doesn't have a prayer... excuse me, McCain's prayers are coming via Hagee.

Ask Hillary First

Are you crazy? Forget what Dean said a few months ago. We know more today than we did yesterday. Today we know Hillary is boring and crazy.

Hillary and Bill have no incentive to see Obama succeed in November. Neither Bill or Hillary can be trusted and I would have thought you would know better. Starting with Ron Brown, our late Commerce Sec’y, to Clinton (Bill) back door dealings with Dubai and Khakastan, etc., while Clinton (Hillary) playing the Senate floor voting against the formers interests; please. What about Colombia Free Trade agreement and Clinton’s (Bill’s) under the table dealings with a regime set to take us to war with Venezuela and Ecuador?

You are advocating that Obama ignore issues that the Republicans will not, like Clinton’s (Bill) perjury and loss of law license; or, Clinton’s (Hillary) lack of a Senate legislative record…I’m from NY, have looked at her achievements and but for Schumer, there’s basically a blank. Claire McCaskill can serve the same role as Hillary; even with all her issues, Palozzi, Biden or Dodd or Webb can support the ticket too. The suggestion that Obama take on the albatross of Billary is disingenuous at best, or a malicious endeavor to sabotage the ‘inevitable’ Democratic Candidacy of Barack on the sneak tip.

Respectfully, if folk do not wish to vote for Barack because he is black, so what…there is need for continued cheap white labor and ‘a racial divide’; or, if white women are pissed off and won’t vote for Barack because their ‘girl’ lost, f#@kum…let them vote to terminate the right of ‘choice’, it’s not like this liberty is equally applied…let them send their sons, brothers and baby daddies to war (the result of an ‘inevitable’ draft). As for, respectfully, older folk…they have all the stock and are the last vestige of our racial divide…these are the same archaic dinosaurs that lead a charge for Plessy v. Ferguson's longevity; may be, as a parting shot for America, they will vote against their conditioned way, perhaps a look toward their progeny’s future and vote Obama whether Hillary is on the Ticket, or not.

Finally, any sane observer would admit Hillary is a bore...in addition, her penchant for the lie is frightening, and in reality, she brings nothing to the OBAMA table but unvetted issues. We need to turn the page and begin a new book.

Brother...

...you said a mouthful! Barack would not only be inviting in the Trojan Horse (or should I say, a Sherman Tank) into the White House, you'd have wonder how Barack could face himself in the mirror each morning knowing the Clintons were lurking in the dark corners of his presidency and Bill...doing God knows what in the White House pantry. I have great faith in Obama's judgement.

First we need to have a nominee

The super delegates need to settle this thing by mid June. I'm fine with Hillary as VP, although I'm not sure she would want the job. My big fear is that she's serious about taking this thing all the way to the convention. That would guarantee a loss for all of us. I hope I'm just being nervous for no reason.

I think it hurts and helps Obama either way. Hillary would have to really work to win over people who don't support her just as Obama will have to with her supporters. The main thing is that the VP pick doesn't alienate the younger people and other new members of our party. We're beginning to create a kind of movement in this country and that's the thing that will bring about real change. At least that is the only thing I trust to bring about change..

No way should Obama pick Hillary

If you think Hillary should be Obama's running mate, then you obviously don't begin to understand Obama's platform and what he is all about. His CENTRAL THEME is change in Washington and taking it back over from the lobbyists and special interests. HIllary is inextricably tied to lobbyists and special interests, and the same old politics the same old way. CHANGE does not mean another Clinton or Bush (not much difference between them!) in charge. With her high disapproval ratings, she will lose votes for him, not gain them. There is no way the Republicans who hate her would vote for him as they have in the primaries. (Remember---those Rush Limbaugh votes were to ensure she would be the candidate, so the Republicans could win!) As VP, she would work to undermine him and his agenda every step of the way. She'd just be playing Dick Cheney to his George Bush.

Buy the Way...Not!

Primary voters constitute a minute portion of the general voting populous (2008 an exceptional year).

If Hillary voters do not feel they can vote for Obama (without her) these holdouts in the general election may be missed, but its a chance one takes in politics. Further, as Hillary has demonstrated, politics is a game of name recognition; no one would argue that its her name (association) that has gotten her to this point. Today, she would probably lose to Barack in Cali if its primary were held today given the growth in his name recognition/popularity. With all the advantages name recognition had brought Hillary, she is still losing to Obama...what's that tell you?

As an aside, suppose Hillary is on the Dem Ticket...would she be held to a budget for campaigning or would Obama's campaign fund have to pick up her spending delights?

In no way am I buying Hillary on an Obama Ticket.

Obama - ask Hillary first.

Thank you Thom for raising the question. I am still hoping that the last 7 years of the Bush Administration was just a nightmare and that I'll wake up, 9/11 would not have happened, we would not be at war, America's integrity would still be in place, and our economy would still be enjoying the budget surplus that President Clinton left for us. I cannot imagine another 4 years with McCain carrying on the Bush tradition. Democrats, centrists and independents need to come together to take our values back to the White House in November.

In order for this to happen the Democratic Party needs to heal itself, otherwise we will lose what is ours to take. I was so proud this last Fall to be in a party that has a woman and a black man as two very viable candidates. This contest has become so divisive the misogyny and racism that has come out of the fray is intolerable. This among democrats, it will only get worse the closer we get to November.

I choose early to be a Clinton supporter and even run as a National Delegate from Washington. Maybe it's because I own a business, am feeling the pinch of the mortgage crisis, I am 37 and have fond memories of the 90's. I did not know much about Obama when this contest began. Hillary's plan to invigorate the economy with her green innovation plan is just what we need. Her unwavering health care for all plan is what we need. I like Obama, I think that he would make a great running mate for Hillary. She is for me and will be the better choice, that will not change. I love her!

If in the end Obama wins the nomination my choice will be clear as a democrat. I will rally and support him in November. I would certainly have more enthusiasm if Hillary were his running mate. I do not think that Obama's supporters would walk away from him if he added her to his ticket. The Obama camp cannot deny Hillary's successes and contributions if they expect to win in November. We cannot afford it as Americans.

My great fear is that if Obama gets the nomination that he will not win without Hillary. Because the racism will get nasty and it is not the Republicans we have to worry about. I know far too many people that have confided in me that they will not vote for a black man, or that they will not vote at all in protest, or that they will write in Hillary's name or they will vote for McCain. I don't get it, but overwhelmingly this is what I hear.

Obama if you are to be our democratic nominee, you have no choice but to ask Hillary first!

On Hillary

WaApplebe, re Hillary you state "I love her!" And, that's part of the problem. As an Obama supporter, I am not blinded by any love for Barack. I don't even care for the Dems, but I trust in the American people and Obama's message.

You further state "I know far too many people that have confided in me that they will not vote for a black man, or that they will not vote at all in protest." And it's your responsibility to convince them of the ignorance they "cling to." Send them to I Corinthians 14:15 or 15:14 which speaks on ignorant people. So, are you suggesting that white democrats are interested in the black vote only to get white democrats elected to leadership positions? I would rather watch the democratic party collapse than give into the political threats of these closet bigots...stay home, protest, eat some popcorn.

I do love her!

Cemlo2, I do love Hillary Clinton. I think that she has accomplished great things and I am proud to support her. Loving her is not a problem. If you do not care about your candidate as much as I care about mine, that is not my problem either.

Everyday I do try to change ignorance. You are right it is my responsibility to change ignorant perspectives. That is why the racism and misogyny in this race has effected me so. I do speak out against these things, which is why I am participating in this blog. The dialog hopefully can make us stronger. I am glad that you have your religion to help you cope with these issues. Maybe you should read Corinthians and check in with the racism and bigotry in your own comments. Life is not fair and elections in America are not wholly democratic. Condemning the whole Democratic Party into collapse is not the answer either.

I am not suggesting that white democrats are interested in the black vote to get white democrats elected to leadership positions. I am sure it happens and that is truly unfortunate, but you will not get better treatment voting Republican either. I am troubled by the double standard between misogyny and racism, in this race. I am troubled by bigotry, homophobia, and classism of any kind that I also see in our own democratic party. This is the first time that we have had a minority (woman or black man) that can win the race for the White House. Instead of being divided, all democrats and others interested in these candidate need to take a good look at themselves and get over there issues for the greater good. We cannot lose with a Hillary/Obama or Obama/Hillary ticket. That is what matters!

We don't need Hillary on the

We don't need Hillary on the ticket. Lets win this thing with some class! Pick Dennis as the VP!

-- McCain = Four more years of the same --

I give Dinnis madd props

but i am praying that is John Edwards. The man is the only candidate who openly raised hell about corporate banks legalized loan sharking. Wake the hell up American do you guys think Fox news will take about the economic enslavement of the citizens? I challenge anyone to read Article 5 of the preamble of U.S. Constitution and tell me that half of congress should not be impeached. These guys are simply paid spys for corporations, would you support making it against the law for ex congressman or senators to go to work in the private sector for a minimum of 20 yrs after they leave office? This way they cant go to work for the companies they legislated, or sit on their boards making millions after they leave office. Besides they get lifetime benifits after one terms they are not hurting in any way? Some of them really care about the quality of life for the people but the majority of them are on the take. Look at the hate that is being spewed by Oriley, Hannity, and Limbaugh these guys will sell their under aged children for a few dollars more. In other words they will do what ever they are told to do are say, their is know morality only corporate profits to consider. Fair and balanced my azz...

Hillary Has Pissed in the Punchbowl ...

... and now you want us to drink it. Basic democratic values abandoned, hob-nobbing with Rupert Murdoch and Richard Melon Scafe, evoking racism while cry sexism, changing colors like an octopus as she tries to sell herself state to state, pandering, lying, distracting -- who IS this woman? Not someone we'd want anywhere near the Obama administration. She and Bill have ruined their shiny reputations during this "I WANT it, it's MINE!" campaign, conducted without ethics or grace. Only the blindly infatuated, the feminists who want a woman president no matter what the cost, or those in line for some nice rewards, could even suggest such a ridiculous alliance as Hillary and Obama. Thom, wake up and smell the punchbowl -- I, for one, am not drinking from that!

what?

Put down the blunt! I am madd as hell with these comments. I respect your thoughts but frankly i dont think you understand the thesis of Obama's campaign. Change means change, Mrs Clinton will always be a thorn in he buttock for Obama. Mrs Clinton will always feel cheated and will continue to micro manage policy dicisions. Whats Obama going to do fire her? She feels that the top spot was entitled to her. We can see her bitterness as she slowly sinks in this election. She is totally willing to hang herself in selfserving attempt to force her way into power. I feel she represents the very things that i dont like about politics. I rather Obama set a new standard for changing America. What will happend When Mrs Clinton gets indited in the Peter Paul case that is coming up in court? Now Fox the hate filled new will be be saying that the currupt Obama administration's Vice President will be the first female VP to ever be what impeached? so tell me what about the Peter Paul noose facing Hillary Clinton can you discuss this?

Do we want to win?

For all of you the love Obama's notion of change or who just recently got involved in the political process because of it, I have to say that it is time to wake up. Elections are not won on idealism and it certainly does not create lasting change. Just ask anyone who remembers the Carter years. Bless him for still being out there fighting the good fight.

Obama on his own is not going to win. At this late stage he is not going to win over the number of Hillary voter's that he will need to win in November without her. He cannot win with half of the Democratic Party disenfranchised.

On this notion of change and how lofty and above it all that some feel the Obama campaign has been run so far . . . are you f**king delusional? Less we forget Rev. Wright, the meeting with the Canadian's regarding his loose position on NAFTA, playing JZ songs on the campaign trail with lyrics like "the bitches never win", how about not saying anything about the "Bro's before Ho's" T-shirts but then getting bent over the "Curious George" T-shirts.

You do not go to Washington even as President and think that you are going to change things by changing the system. Hillary knows that from her Health Care proposals in the 90's and Obama know it too even with his meager time as a Senator. He is not stupid, he is not above the fray, it is lip service and his supporters are licking it up.

Maybe reality will set in when we lose in November.

Do we want to win?

Yes. Which is why we don't want a loser on the ticket with Obama. You'll get it, eventually.

NOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!

I could not possibly disagree with Thom more on this point. The Republicans who voted for Hillary in the primaries will be voting for McCain regardless of who the Democrats add as VP. Nothing is gained by putting Hillary on the ticket and we will lose a very significant segment of Obama's supporters if they do plus it will galvanize the Republicans and Independents to vote for McCain. Putting Hillary on the ticket would ensure a McCain victory and it would be a betrayal of everything the Obama campaign stands for - a new style of politics, not Washington-insider backroom deal making with snakes. Personally I want the Democratic Party to nominate a DEMOCRAT for the VP position on the ticket. Hillary is not a Democrat as she has reconfirmed over and over again the past few months where she has campaigned using a Republican strategy pushing republican positions. Her campaign has brought disgrace on the Democratic Party with her racism, negativity, and scorched earth strategy. Rewarding her with a spot on the ticket would severely damage the Democratic Party party this election. It would not only lose us the presidency but also hurt every Democratic candidate nationwide. Why would we do that?????

Keep smoking whatever you are smoking!

Douglasdao, really? It was Republicans that have voted for Hillary? Your comments show you as one of these new Obama supporters. I am glad that you are on board as a Democrat, but you clearly are misguided about this election process. In caucus states for instance you can only be counted if you are a declared Democrat to vote for a Democrat and many states that are a primary election states or a hybrid of the two also require you to declare yourself a Democrat. Few states anymore give you the option.

It is not a wave of Republicans that voted for Hillary. They know that she is a tough as nails candidate, and that it would be tough for McCain to beat her. My guess is that if any Republicans did vote for a Democrat in primary states where it is possible to do so, I am sure that they would have voted for Obama.

Cut the condescension and get a clue

Actually I am in Illinois and supported Obama when he ran for U.S. Senate in 2004. I have been a volunteer in his campaigns for that long. I made my first donation to the Obama presidential campaign in March of 2007. I suspect you are one of the anti-Obama non-Democrats who try to sow dissension on Democratic forms with bizarre statements. That you are unaware of the Republican mobilization in numerous states to vote for Hillary to sabotage the Democratic campaign discredits you.

But I am sure you are aware, you are just being dishonest. You know that in over a dozen states it was legal to switch party identification in order to vote in a party's primary. You know that Rush Limbaugh among others actively encouraged Republicans to do that. You know the Republicans called this "Operation Chaos." You know that an unknown but nevertheless significant percentage of votes received by Hillary that past two months has been from "Operation Chaos" Republicans. You also know that the Republicans have openly stated many times that they would rather face Hillary because she is the weaker candidate. We all know all of that.

Crossover repubs

There were a good number of republican voters crossing the lines in states that allow it. For the most part they are disenchanted voters who legitimately expect to vote for them dems in Nov. They are probably divided fairly evenly between Barack and Hillary.

There was another bloc of cross overs. A deliberate effort was made with Rush Limbaugh encouraging it to have Repubs vote for Hillary. It was done for 2 reasons. 1) to disrupt the process and add to the strain between the factions. and 2) because Hillary is the candidate they most want to run against. This group is the smaller portion of the crossovers, but probably did make the difference in Indiana.

Hillary for VP - Senate Majority Lead - Supreme Court

Thom,

How can rationalize all of LIES & DECEIT Hillary has / and continues to spew out to fool the public and in particular the most vunerable (poor, uneducated, etc.) -- then recommend her for VP - Senate Majority Lead - Supreme Court????

Where are your standards?
Haven't we had enough of that crap with Bush?

Get off the Hillary promotion.

Let's see. First, an

Let's see. First, an Obama-Clinton was no good, due to some theory of counseling that couples should get divorced or not get married or something if they have said bad things about each other--destructive nonsense about "below the belt" and "fair fighting". At the time, I was advising that this theory was nonsense even in the marital domain, and that the ticket should be Obama-Clinton, to heal the wounds. Then Clinton offhandedly introduced and endorsed the idea of obliterating a country if it were to launch an impossible attack on a nation with which we have no treaty of mutual defense, and so I and probably many others decided that, no, Clinton really isn't up to the job. Go ask Joe Biden or whomever. Days and days later, Thom Hartmann finally decides we should heal the wounds with an Obama-Clinton ticket.

Thom might be right about that, actually; maybe I abandoned Clinton too easily, though I don't yet think so.

But the relationship counseling I still think is destructive nonsense, and all Thom needs to do is apply his former reasoning in reverse. :)

In the end, Barack Obama will decide what to do, and his decision most likely will be a wise one.

Good God, Thom

Grab hold of your senses.

Asking Hillary to be on his ticket would say nothing less than "hypocrite"about Obama.
It would simply say that all of what he has been talking about is meaningless bullshit.

And why the hell should he even offer the slot to someone who's been trying to harm his chances without end, saying repeatedly that he'll lose? Moreover, why would anyone think that she would want to be on the ticket seeing as to how she thinks he will lose?

Is someone trying to tell me she wants to be on a ticket that will lose?

Or maybe she doesn't really think it will lose and she's simply been spewing utter garbage and elephanshit for weeks on end in an attempt to divide the Party? In which case, someone please explain again why she should be offered the slot?

The thought is madness, plain and simple.

Ask Hillaryfirst

Please, Thom, have you lost it?

If she took Obama up on the offer, it would be disastrous! First, she wouldn't be his 'change' person. Second, he needs experience, ie military person or state dept type, like Webb, Richardson, etc.

Finally, she will bring out all the Repubs to vote against her. Plus, gosh knows what baggage she has that is not known yet because Obama is a gentleman.

You must be smoking funny stuff to come up this this idea and to not only post it here but send it like spam into our mailboxes.

According to TIME

She asked and he refused. THANK YOU BARACK.

I'm a little surprised at some of the comments that indicate this race is going to resemble any from the past very well since FDR was elected.

There are some things that will continue- hopefully to a lesser degree. Some of the GOP base will come out to vote AGAINST a black, a woman, a Clinton. I'm not fond of adding a woman to the ticket. One minority is going to cost enough. We need the biggest mandate we can get in Nov.

After Obliterate, there is no way he needs her on that ticket. The world is rooting for Obama because he is perceived as someone who will get America to be a world leader without the arrogance and aggression. Others have covered the domestic reasons she doesn't belong on it.

Aside from the polls already showing Barack ahead of McCain, I think he has shown quite clearly he can connect with a wide range of voters when he has a chance to campaign in their region. Despite all the hot air about no substance and empty suits, he does have a lot to offer. As an RN I am MUCH happier with Obama because I think he will listen to the health care providers and move us to national health insurance. Which 59% of physicians now prefer.

The Hillary supporters who don't want to be team players? I would hope they could get over this and at least get to the poll and vote for our nominee. It was close, the disappointment is agonizing. I think Obama is fully aware of that. I also don't get how, considering his wife and daughters, anyone can think he will not be dedicated to women's issues.

The reality is she blew it. Just enough for him to get more votes. That is politics.

Obama CAN win in November - if Hillary's supporters don't sabotage the election. He will also make an excellent president, as long as WE stay involved.

Thom, all I can say is that this has allowed me to follow something in my bible:

A wise teacher kills the idol you have made of him.

Thanks. I will continue to appreciate your vast knowledge and grasp of complex issues.

Say it ain't so.

Thom, why are you doing this? How can you feel that Hillary is Obama's best running mate?

Obama supporters don't want it ... Hilliary supporters will hate it, too.

I am so disappointed that you are taking up this platform.

I am *this* close to canceling my AAR subscription. This will probably put me over the edge. Sam's gone on Sundays ... Rachel is *canned* most of the time.

Man, what a waste.

I like edwards or kuchinich (not clinton)

I like edwards or kuchinich (not clinton)..

I suspect hartman wantuing clinton is because she got so many votes.. I believe all the CON's voting for hillary in the primary has made it "look like" hillary is much more popular than she is.. Selecting VP of edrards or kuchinich would reach out to voters who will vote in the actual election..

Hillary VP

This would be a bad idea. I don't think President Obama could trust her. She certainly has shown that she is out for herself over the party. There are other more capable and logical choices. I hope he asks John Richardson or Joe Biden. Hillary just isn't a team player, and she is from the old school.

Now I know you must truly believe that we have lost our minds!!!

RobLO

Thom you are nuts!! Hillary, and her, ' Blonde Ambition Tour', has not only kicked that door, and slammed it shut, she has also set Claymore bombs up to kill any one trying to open it. How could you think that Hill-o would be willing to take orders from a BLACK UNQUALIFIED PREACHER/SPEECHMAKER WHO IS IN NO WAY PREPARED TO BE PRESIDENT. If you truly believe that all the women over 50 are truly going to stay home, or vote for maccain so that they can be apart of slanting the the supreme court toward the far right for a GENERATION, you've lost your marbles. I mean I know lots of women over 50 and they are just dying to see, IN THEIR LIFETIMES, WOMEN GAIN AND LOSE THE RIGHT TO HAVE REPRODUCTIVE CONTROL, and of course they can't wait for women civil rights to begin to go away so that women's lib can just be an idea again like it was when they were young.

"Hillary's legacy in this 08 election could place her as the healer and bring together a united Democratic party. As a winning ticket they also move this country closer to healing the racial and misogynist undertones that still have roots."

Hill-o brought race into this, and she is set up sadly just like her husband was to sell the country down the river just to get/stay in office. Why do you think I can only hear your radio show on the internet, or on pay radio. Thank you bill, 'please don't impeach me', clinton. He could have stood up and told the truth and then enlisted the aid of party to expose the republicans, current and past who had also strayed from their wives, (Eisenhower for 1 ...), Then all he would have had to do was apologize, and put a little faith in the american people. Hill-o has accepted the support of rupert murdock, and gone on the air on the o'reily factor. Let hill-o be maccain's vp. You also need to have more faith in the american people as well.

Thom - I listen to you every

Thom -

I listen to you every day, but in this case you are painting a politically expedient picture but tone deaf to the narrative of Obama and his candidacy.

Hillary is acting like a bull in a china shop, breaking everything as she parades toward Denver.
Her most ardent supporters are attacking their own, witness Emily's List slamming NARAL.
I thought that pro-choice implied choice not dictation.

And their is more baggage to come out and be used against her by the Republicans.
It doesn't appear Obama won't use mud on her.
If he chooses her, he will have her mud to clean up.

Can you imagine Hillary and Bill taking the appropriate role in an Obama government?

They would do just what they are doing now.
They won't play fair.

There are better choices for change.

Hillary - I agree... put her on the ticket

Thom,
I totally agree with you, and I am sick and tired of Obama supporters being so "our way or the highway" about this. It's like they don't consider anyone who doesn't agree with them to be a true Democrat, and that is very disrespectful for those of us who have been involved, and in the party for years and years. The Clinton years were GREAT for America, and anyone who doesn't remember that should study their history books. Hillary has suffered so much abuse at the hands of the Republicans, and I just can't stand that now she is suffering such horrible abuse at the hands of these new Democrats, too.
If we think Hillary is better for the country, just based on experience alone, we are told that we aren't for "real" change. Come on, folks. What are you talking about? Hillary is one of the most active, and hard-working senators in the Congress. Obama hasn't done anything compared to her. Why in the world do we, as loyal Democrats, have to just step aside and let Obama have it, when we TRULY do not believe he has the experience necessary to run this country effectively? Why are we being trashed because we truly believe in our candidate?
Yes, ANYTHING is better than John McCain, but we can do better than just "anything". We could have someone who has truly PROVEN herself to be both hard-working, and tenacious!
It truly bothers me that someone can come along with smooth words, and just wipe out an incredible woman's life's work without the majority of us, her party, truly standing up for her. I'm so glad you are recognizing that she is a powerful force for good in this country...and she is willing to give so much more. I just wonder, at this point, if we, as a party, are worthy of her. She has given so much to us, and I know I speak for a lot of Democrats when I say, "we don't want to just be bowled over by people who think she should just shut up and go home". We DO recognize how much service she has given to this country, and we DO want her to be part of the presidential ticket! Almost half of us really want her to be the first person on the ticket. Asking her to honor us as the Vice-President would be honoring those of us voters who also are a part of the party. In our opinion, this option would at least give Obama some "real" experience, and give millions of us Democrats something to believe in and vote for... because there are millions of us who simply DON'T drink the Obama cool-aide. We've seen too many politicians talk the talk, without walking the walk. This country is too messed up to settle for just words. Hillary is all action. If that makes her more vulnerable to attacks, let those be from the other side. She has done all she can to really keep this country from going down the tubes further than it could have. WE HATE THAT SHE IS BEING ATTACKED BY THE VERY PEOPLE SHE HAS HELPED! If you who only want the candidate you want can't see that, you are being incredibly disrespectful to a true Democrat, in every sense of the word.
THANK YOU THOM, FOR TAKING A STAND THAT MILLIONS OF US REALLY APPRECIATE.

It truly bothers me that someone can come along with smooth words, and just wipe out an incredible woman's life's work
-------------------------
Yeah, Barack Obama "wiped out an incredible woman's life's work" with his speeches.
Hillary's own actions had nothing to do with it.

Fuckin' spare us.

Her support for NAFTA, her willingness to be treated like a doormat by her husband, her vote for Bush's war in Iraq, her refusal to admit it was a mistake, her standing by the vote, her failing to learn from that mistake and voting for Cheney's Iran legislation, her constant embrace of Republican-lite policies, her attempts to divide through race-baiting, her attacks on the Party, her saying one thing while doing another, and on and on and on... none of that had anything to do with the position she now finds herself in.

Please kindly pluck your head from your tightly constricted anus...

Yeah, but nobody can rock a sniper proof Kevlar pantsuit quite like she can.

Support the Troops
End the Occupation

I disagree with you on this one Thom.

I am also shocked you would agree that a Republicanized Democrat that has stayed with a famous infidel just so she could try to steal the white house should be first in line to the presidency, especially when the neocons are publicly admitting they plan to try to whack Obama when he is elected.

Obama doesn't need another entity with incentive to do the same. (See Vince Foster)

For 3 years I have heard you talk about the corporatization of our government. I have heard you advocate against the very crony trade agreements that the Clintons began in the 90's, not to mention normalization of trade with China by Slick Willy, so we could screw over millions of Americans by sending their livelihoods overseas in return for Walmart and McDonald's specials.

I have had my fill of a vice president overstepping his constitutional boundaries and claiming he is untouchable by any law. I would anticipate the same arrogance out of Hillary considering her undeniable display of entitlement.

Obama needs to be strong himself this election and not rely on a running mate to show strength while he assumes the wimpy Kerry posture. When he is elected, he sure as hell doesn't need to Clinton corporatist dynasty trying to foil his attempts at reform at every turn.

If we elect a proven corporatist as the v.p. we have gotten nowhere with this election when it comes to the issue of change. We still have a half Republican administration. Hillary should be McCain's running mate, since they have more in common when it comes to economic and trade policy, because their is no category of policy making that impacts and punishes Americans more than the crony corporate trade agenda that you have told us over and over is killing off the middle class.

Who gives a shit where Hillary stands on gun control, abortion, gay rights, freedom of speech, etc, when these things mean very little to bankrupt or homeless Americans?

All of todays suffering in America can be tied to the cesspool of crony trade agreements the Clinton dynasty and the Republicans have championed for over a decade now.

I am disappointed with your hypocrisy on this issue. I didn't even address her promotion of imperialism through support of illegal warmongering, which I also believe I have heard you speak against.

If America wanted this Republican as their Democratic presidential candidate, she would have actually won the primary, regardless of her multiple attempts to cheat her way to a victory. Hell, she couldn't even win with her Republican voters that crossed over to make sure we had a choice between two Republicans come this November.

Obama should stay as far away from Clinton as possible.

Well said. Good post.

NO Hilary

Hilary has taken herself out of consideration by campaigning like a Rape-the-public-cons. It is disgusting the way her campaign has used race in this election, not what the Democratic Party should ever condone. Let her do her penance and prove she is a worthy Democrat by putting all her effort into getting the Democratic Ticket elected without her on it.

No clinton any where

Because she and her campaign were to incompetent to run a GUARANTEED nominee campaign, she should be GIVEN the consolation prize, automatically get on the winning ticket because of who she is. This is bullshit, your argument about her being able to be the bull dog is just what Obama does not want... fight back but not the clinton/rove way. clintons have said and tried everything to beat Barack and failed, she lost, and he taking her on his ticket will be seen/used as weakness because of her action.

She and bill are so toxic what ever they touch will sour PERIOD. Most important she will cut into his AA base, independent base, and young voting base, nothing to say about bill wondering the world making deals that will screw up the Obama administration, repeat of the clinton administrations crap.

All the promises the clintons have made to get donation will not manifest and the opportunity to receive more money has dried up. No more large checks for speeches and no more checks for his aids foundation... all the clintons FAULT for how they ran their campaign.

No, he should not off her NOTHING, she did not earn it and does not deserve it. Let those race baiting, party destroying, habitual lying, manipulating, divisive, power hungry, clintons fade to OBLIVION.

I agree with Thom

As a Clinton supporter and the husband of an avid Clinton voter, I find myself leaning more towards Obama than Clinton, however my wife would be very dis-appointed if Clinton does not win. After the Democratic loss in 2000, and again in 2004, this, for my wife, is the third loss (even though it is not the big prize) - she is pretty much fed up with the process. In this frame of mind, it would take Clinton being on the ticket, to motivate my wife to the polls. I am sure there are many others like her. I feel the two candidates positions are similar enough (and more importantly - what they can actually affect is basically the same). I will definitely support Obama or Clinton over McCain, but for some people they will need to see their democrat on the ticket to motivate to the polls. If for some reason Clinton were to be the nominee, I feel as strongly that Obama should be on the ticket for much the same reason. If we can merge 85% of the people that came to vote for Hillary or Barack - I think the Dems would win the general election.

A Nightmare, not a Dream

Putting Hillary on the ticket is just an awful idea. While it MIGHT bring along the few misinformed Hillary hardcore supporters who think Obama is stealing the election, it would MOST CERTAINLY cause many more Obama supporters to turn away. Thom, I appreciate that you are fair (sometimes to a fault), but even you said Hillary "hit below the belt" with her praise of McCain and dismissals of Obama. I would have gladly voted for her when this all started, but, having seen her bad behavior throughout the primary process, I would really have to hold my nose to vote for her now (even for dogcatcher). She is the complete opposite of Obama who has played by the rules and been gracious throughout. And, as I've seen elsewhere, with the Clintons in the White House, Obama would need to employ a foodtaster!

Stupidity is dangerous!

Hillary is Hubristic and ruthless and people with those qualities are almost always self'-destructive. McCain would love to use her comments about Obama against him. " I have experience, MacCain has experience and Obama gave a speech two years ago". Remember that one? I'm sure McCain will, and many others too.
